Name: Historical Dictionary of Sexspionage
Author: Nigel West
Publisher: Scarecrow Press
Publication date: 2009
ISBN: 0810859998
Number of pages: 401
Format / Quality: rar -> pdf
Size: 1,39 MB

In a surprising number of espionage cases sex has played a significant role—often only in the background—possibly as a reason why a particular individual has lived beyond his means and is in desperate need of cash. FBI agent Earl Pitts sold secrets to the Soviets to ease his financial burdens, which came from his habitually heavy use of male and female prostitutes. Yuri Nosenko collaborated with the CIA after having misappropriated KGB funds to entertain expensive women while on official duties in Geneva, and Aleksandr Ogorodnik of the Soviet foreign ministry was persuaded to become a spy by his pregnant Spanish lover, an agent recruited by the CIA.

In the realm of human behavior, sex can be the catalyst for risky or reckless conduct. The Historical Dictionary of Sexspionage explores this behavior through a chronology, an introduction, a bibliography, and hundreds of cross-referenced dictionary entries on the secret agencies, operations, and events. From Delilah's seduction of Samson in 1161 BC to State Department official Donald Keyser's conviction of passing secrets to Isabelle Cheng, a Taiwanese intelligence officer, in 2007, Nigel West recounts the history of sexspionage.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Nigel West is currently the European Editor of the International Journal of Intelligence and Counter-Intelligence and teaches the history of postwar intelligence at the Centre for Counterintelligence and Security Studies in Alexandria, VA. He is the author of many books, including the Historical Dictionary of British Intelligence (Scarecrow Press, 2005), Historical Dictionary of International Intelligence (Scarecrow Press, 2006), and Historical Dictionary of Cold War Counterintelligence (Scarecrow Press, 2007). In October 2003 he was awarded the U.S. Association of Former Intelligence Officers' first Lifetime Literature Achievement Award.

Name: Historical Dictionary of Spain
Author: Angel Smith

Publication date: 2009
ISBN: 0810858495
Number of pages: 688
Format / Quality: rar -> pdf

Over the last two centuries, Spain has played an important role in Western Europe. Spanish soldiers and guerrillas helped inflict the first major defeat on Napoleon. It became a symbol of the struggle against fascism during its bloody Civil War (1936-1939). Recently, the country underwent a peaceful transition from military dictatorship to parliamentary democracy and has become a partner within both NATO and the European Union. The "Historical Dictionary of Spain" details these events and examines the country's painful adjustment to modernity. It provides a comprehensive reference guide to the modern economic, social, and political history of Spain beginning with Napoleon's invasion in 1808. Its approximately 400 entries focus on leading figures, key political parties and historical events, economic resources, institutions, geography, and its vibrant cultural life. It is fully cross-referenced and supplemented with a general historical introduction, list of abbreviations and acronyms, detailed chronology, extensive bibliography and bibliographical commentary, a number of tables outlining major economic and political trends, and maps.

In contrast to its relatively small size, the Netherlands has been an important and influential state in Europe and the world. The Dutch have been agitators for independence, they have fought for rights, dominated the seas, and in past generations, created a far-flung colonial empire. In the arts and sciences, the Netherlands has begotten more than its share of painters, musicians, writers, philosophers, theologians, and economists. "Historical Dictionary of the Netherlands" provides basic information on people and topics from Dutch political, intellectual, and colonial history and culture in nearly 600 concise entries. The "Dictionary" covers Dutch history from the earliest stages (before there was a Netherlands) through the current political, economic, and cultural situations. Also included is an introduction which assists readers to understand the basic patterns and important events of Dutch history. The concluding bibliography wil help researchers locate additional information on recent books (published after 1970, mainly in English).

Name: Historical Dictionary of Socialism
Author: James C. Docherty
Publisher: The Scarecrow Press, Inc.
Publication date: 2006-10-28
ISBN: 0810855607
Number of pages: 504
Format / Quality: rar -> pdf
Size: 2,43 MB

Recent election wins by left of center parties in Western Europe testify to the continued vitality of the tradition of democratic socialism. Socialism has been the leading ideology for social change for over a century. It has been a philosophy, a mass movement, and a substitute religion. It has inspired millions and aroused fear and revulsion in its enemies. It has sought to change the world for the better and in many important respects has done so. Yet socialism remains a paradox. Professing only to do good, great crimes against humanity have been committed in its name. Democratic and egalitarian in theory, it has been used to justify totalitarian dictatorship in practice. This dictionary offers a reliable, comprehensive introduction and guide to this contentious social movement and ideology, examining where it has succeeded and where it has failed. It traces the evolution of socialism from the early nineteenth century up to the present. Unlike other general works on the subject, it is primarily concerned with the democratic tradition of socialism and is careful to differentiate this tradition from those elements of socialism which later became communism. It contains 327 entries and many cross-references which cover not just thinkers, ideas and political parties, but also education, women, literature, and policies. With glossary, chronology, statistical appendix and bibliography.

Name: Historical Dictionary of United States-Latin American Relations

Number of pages: 328

Size: 2,74 MB

From the assertion of the Monroe Doctrine in 1823 to the Reagan Doctrine of the 1980s, the United States has presumed a position of political leadership and pre-eminence in the Western Hemisphere. This has been made possible by two main factors: America's huge economy, which has made the U.S. the largest single commercial market and the biggest investor in Latin America, and America's military prowess, which has been convincingly demonstrated in victories in the Mexican-American War (1846-1848) and the Spanish-American War (1898).

This volume concentrates on the history of diplomatic relations between the U.S. and the nations of Latin America from the creation of the independent United States in the late eighteenth century up to the present. This is accomplished through a chronology, an introduction, a bibliography, appendixes, and hundreds of cross-referenced dictionary entries on the countries involved, significant events, major crises, important figures, controversial issues, and doctrines and policies that have evolved. For scholars, historians, and students interested in the diplomacy of these two regions, the Historical Dictionary of United States-Latin American Relations is an essential reference.

The Byzantine Empire is often overlooked by Western scholars as an off-shoot of Greco-Roman tradition, an Eastern empire of little significance to Western European tradition. But Byzantium was really the only true European empire of the Middle Ages, the continuation of the Roman Empire in the East, long after the sacking of Rome by the Vandals. It began in 324 with the founding of Constantinople by the Christian emperor Constantine I. This city became the seat of the Eastern empire and the home and protector of Orthodox Christianity. It ended in 1453 with the conquest of Constantinople by the Ottoman Turks. Byzantium left an enduring legacy through its art, in the Orthodox churches, and in its successor states such as Russia, Greece, and Serbia. The Byzantine Empire, its beginnings, development, and fall are summarized in a chronology and explained in the introduction. The dictionary then presents significant people (emperors, church leaders, generals, writers, etc.), events (wars, sieges, coups, councils and treaties) and important cultural aspects such as economics, art, and religion. A substantial bibliography is included for further reference on this extensive empire.

"Anglicanism arguably originated in 1534 when Parliament passed the Act of Supremacy, which transferred papal power over the Church of England to the king. Today, approximately 550 dioceses are located around the world, not only in England, but also everywhere that the British Empire's area of influence extended. With an estimated total membership of about 75 million, Anglicanism is one of the largest and most varied Christian denominations. With such a long history and widespread flock, it is not easy to keep track of the variations of a religious community that has not ceased adapting since its inception. Hundreds of entries on significant persons and events, concepts and institutions, rituals and liturgy, and national communities, make this an invaluable reference for religious historians, theologians, and researchers. Also included are an introduction, a chronology that traces the church's evolution over time, and a bibliography." - reader's review.

The literature of Scandinavia is amazingly rich and varied, consisting of the works produced by the countries of Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Finland and Iceland, and stretching from the ancient Norse Sagas to the present day. While obviously including the area's most famous works, the Historical Dictionary of Scandinavian Literature and Theater also provides information on lesser known authors and currents trends, literary circles and journals, and historical background. Despite constant hindrance from government interference and control, the Russian theater has produced many memorable playwrights, schools of thought, and plays, whose influence can be seen throughout the world. Nikolai Gogol''s The Inspector, Maksim Gor'kii's The Lower Depths, and Anton Chekhov's The Cherry Orchard remain staples of repertories in every language. The ideas of Konstantin Stanislavskii, Vsevolod Meierkhol'd, and Mikhail Chekhov continue to inspire actors and directors, and designers still draw on the graphics of the World of Art group and the Constructivists.

The Historical Dictionary of Russian Theater is the only reference work in English devoted exclusively to Russian theater and drama. It provides information on the popular plays and playwrights while also offering information on many persons, works, and phenomena omitted from standard encyclopedias. Through the use of a chronology, an introductory essay, a bibliography, an appendix, and hundreds of cross-referenced dictionary entries on directors, stage designers, actors, plays, playwrights, concepts, theater buildings, and troupes, this reference provides an unrivaled account of Russian theater.

Name: Historical Dictionary of German Cinema
Author: Robert C. Reimer
Publisher: The Scarecrow Press, Inc.

ISBN: 0810856239
Number of pages: 520

Size: 4,22 MB

German film is diverse and multi-faceted; its history includes five distinct German governments (Wilhelmine Germany, the Weimar Republic, the Third Reich, the Federal Republic of Germany, and the German Democratic Republic), two national industries (Germany and Austria), and a myriad of styles and production methods. Paradoxically, the political disruptions that have produced these distinct film eras, as well as the natural inclination of artists to rebel and create new styles, allow for the construction of a narrative of German film. While the disjuncture generates distinct points of separation, it also highlights continuities between the ruptures.

Outlining the richness of German film, the Historical Dictionary of German Cinema covers mainstream, alternative, and experimental film from 1895 to the present through a chronology, introductory essay, appendix of the 100 most significant German films, a bibliography, and hundreds of cross-referenced dictionary entries on directors, actors, films, cinematographers, composers, producers, and major historical events that greatly affected the direction and development of German cinema. The book's broad canvas will lead students and scholars of cinema to appreciate the complex nature of German film.

Name: Historical Dictionary of U.S. Diplomacy since the Cold War
Author: Tom Lansford
Publisher: The Scarecrow Press, Inc.
Publication date: 2007-09-28
ISBN: 0810856352
Number of pages: 392
Format / Quality: rar -> pdf
Size: 9,50 MB

The post-Cold War diplomacy of the United States evolved in stages that reflected changes in the international system. Through the 1990s, the nation's foreign affairs were marked by an evolution away from the post-World War II focus on security and superpower competition to a more multifaceted and nuanced series of policies that included economic concerns, social and cultural issues, and environmental matters. However, an escalating series of terrorist attacks that culminated in the 11 September 2001 strikes on New York and Washington, D.C. led to the reemergence of security as the main foreign policy issue for the United States. The subsequent American-led "war on terror" mirrored the Cold War in its goals, and the administration of President George W. Bush endeavored to build a multinational counterterrorism coalition that paralleled the Western alliance of the bipolar era.

The Historical Dictionary of U.S. Diplomacy Since the Cold War is a concise overview of the main figures, conflicts, events, and policies of the United States in the post-Cold War era. The study explores the main elements of U.S. foreign policy and the regional and international reaction to American policies from the presidency of George H. W. Bush to that of George W. Bush. Through its entries, the book analyzes the underlying themes of U.S. diplomacy and the new policies formulated and implemented in response to broad changes in global politics. The book includes a chronology of events from 1991 to 2007, an introduction that highlights important themes of the era, cross-referenced entries on significant topics, a detailed bibliography, and appendixes of major documents. The work is ideal for both public and academic libraries, the general public, or the specialist looking for a reference tool in this area.

Number of pages: 360

The Cape Verde Islands have acquired unusual political and strategic significance in Africa because of the nationalist party, the PAIGC, and its notable founder, Amilcar Babral, who led a protracted armed struggle against Portuguese colonialism. This new third edition presents students and researchers with concise entries and references which assist in further research. This dictionary now includes an expanded discussion of Crioulo culture and modern politics, including the 1991 multi-party elections. The introduction traces the pre-colonial and colonial past in the Upper Guinea coast as well as the background to Portuguese maritime exploration in the 15th century. The book offers an integrated overview of Portuguese, Genoan, Guinean, Senegambian, and Jewish history from which Cape Verdean society has emerged. The book covers the early Portuguese explorers and conquerers, as well as famous visitors such as Columbus, DaGama, Drake, Darwin, and Lindburgh. The American consuls to Cape Verde, the African Squadron, and ties to New England and Brazil with the Marquis de Pombal are now covered. Expanded and updated information is included on the economy, emigration, ecology, and foreign and domestic politics, with new and expanded sections on popular music and ethnomusicology specially written by Susan Hurley-Glowa, doctoral candidate at Brown University. Entries on linguistics, early inscriptions, literary figures, and other cultural and artistic traditions are updated and substantially enlarged. This dictionary also includes an expanded and updated historical chronology, acronyms, maps, definitions of Portuguese terms, and a comprehensive and up-to-date bibliography.

Name: Historical Dictionary of the Crusades
Author: Corliss K. Slack
Publisher: The Scarecrow Press
Publication date: 2003
ISBN: 0810848554
Number of pages: 304
Format / Quality: rar -> pdf
Size: 54.1 MB

During the late eleventh through the early fourteenth centuries, at least seven major expeditions were made between Western Europe and the Holy Land with the goal of ending Muslim control of Jerusalem. Ultimately the crusaders were driven out, but not before a cultural exchange had taken place that had an immense impact on Western Europe and an equally enormous, albeit less positive, impact on Arabs and the Islamic world.

Although the crusades occurred many centuries ago, echoes still resound through the current clashes of nations and ideologies, kidnappings for ransom, assassinations, and the declaring of "jihad"—all making the crusades an eminently timely subject. This one-volume overview therefore provides an accessible reference work for scholars, students, and general readers on the period with numerous entries on key persons, places, events, battles and sieges, use of weapons and armor, and the deeper issues of the political and cultural background. Complete with maps, a detailed chronology, and an extensive bibliography, this work allows readers to learn how Europe was changed forever by these battles with Islam.

Name: Historical Dictionary of Hong Kong Cinema
Author: Lisa Odham Stokes
Publisher: The Scarecrow Press
Publication date: 2007
ISBN: 0810855208
Number of pages: 640
Format / Quality: rar -> pdf
Size: 1.90 MB

Despite the industry being shutdown by two world wars, having its martial arts films dismissively labeled as "chopsocky," and operating on shoestring budgets, the films of Hong Kong have been praised and imitated all over the world. From its beginning in 1909 with the silent short Stealing the Roast Duck to the martial arts classic Enter the Dragon (1973) to Peter Chan's Perhaps Love (2005), a reinvention of Chinese musicals via Hollywood, the vast cinema of Hong Kong has continually reinvented itself. Stars such as Bruce Lee, Jackie Chan, and Jet Li have become household names, and actors like Andy Lau, Maggie Cheung, Stephen Chiau, Michelle Yeoh, and Chow Yun-fat continue to gain fame throughout the world. And the impact of directors like Ang Lee, Tsui Hark, Wong Kar-wai, and John Woo can be seen nearly everywhere in Hollywood.

The Historical Dictionary of Hong Kong Cinema provides essential facts and descriptive evaluation concerning Hong Kong filmmaking and its filmmaking community. This is accomplished through the use of a chronology, a list of acronyms and abbreviations, an introductory essay, illustrations of individuals and film stills, a bibliography, and hundreds of cross-referenced dictionary entries on directors, producers, writers, actors, films, film companies, genres, and terminology. Having perused this, readers will not only know considerably more about a rather amazing place, they will have an almost palpable feeling for how it works.
