Для тех, кому интересно происхождение сабжа - спряжение древнеанглийского глагола wesan - bēon в Past Subjunctive:
все лица ед. ч. - wǣre ,
все лица  мн. ч. - wǣren,

в отличие от Past Indicative:
1 ед.ч.      wæs
2  ед.        wǣre
3  ед.        wæs
мн. ч.       wǣron
(Уэссекский диалект.
-n в совр. яз. отпал, как и в инфинитиве.)

We was is not standard English, it is used in some regional dialects:

    The verb 'to be' has two simple past forms in Standard English - I/he/she/it was and you/we/they were. Apart from the special case of you, the distinction is, therefore, between singular was and plural were

    In some regional dialects, however, this pattern is not observed. In some parts of the country, speakers use was throughout, while speakers elsewhere use were exclusively. There are also dialects where the two different forms are used for the opposite function - singular were and plural was.

Тут ишшо можно вспомнить классиков в лице Леннона-Маккартни с немного обратной ситуацией.

Короче, were здесь - форма сослагательного наклонения прошедшего времени, не изменяемая по числам. Для всех глаголов, кроме to be, совпадает с простым претеритом изъявительного наклонения.

Спасибо за комменты, стало немного яснее. Я стараюсь много читать, но такие выражения попадаются очень редко. А конкретно в этой книге их много, прям глаза цепляет.
