The reason is that most of them are false friends. Thus, shard, hound and the verb own are akin to German Scharte, Hund and gönnen, but their meaning differs significantly from the meaning of their German æquivalents. Whereas the meaning of words derived from Latin often coincides with the meaning in Latin, therefore they are easier to cope with.

In fact, a few messages ago Ellidi confessed that there's much to be desired about his proficiency (sorry to say this). I mean this quotation:
