:umnik:

:P :smoke:

Например, вместо light of the moon произносят light ob de moon.

Me ia crea un otra ortografia per engles. Lo es nomida Thornica.

Thornica:

Here I humbly present a book converted into Þornica, an alternate English spelling system:

Dauter ov Regals, by Steeven R. Donaldson

While my system turned out more consistent than the current English orthography, it's still is far from perfect, so I now rather consider it an artistic project, not a serious orthography proposal. An orthography from an alternate timeline.

My goal was to keep the basic rules of the English orthography, but to get rid of the most apparent inconsistencies.

* The voiced and unvoiced sounds of TH are spelt as 'Þ' (a purely artistic feature).
* SE when pronounced /s/ while it looks like it should be pronounced /z/ is spelled as CE: 'houce'.
* The soft G always is spelt as J.
* OU and OW always are pronounced as in 'how'. OW is used in the word-final positions, and OU otherwise.
* 'One' is spelt as 'wun', and 'own' as 'one'.
* When U is pronounced as in 'full' it's spelt as 'ú'.
* the letter I is spelt as Y when there is no other way to show that it's pronounced long: 'mynd'.
* When A is pronounced as O, it's spelt as O: 'oll', 'whot'
* When O is pronounced as U, it's spelt as U: 'wunder'.
* the digraph GH is eliminated, and words are spelt as pronounced: 'laff', 'lite'.
* When OR is pronounced as UR, it's spelt as ER: 'werd'.
* When you have to show that the letter E is not pronounced as in UR, or as EE, it's spelt as 'é': 'whér'.
* When EA is not pronounced EE, it's spelt according to its pronunciation: 'braik', 'insted'.
* Most silent consonants are eliminated: 'dout'.
* TION is spelt as CION when is pronounced SHEN, and as TION when is pronounced CHEN: 'caucion', 'question'.
* Word-final Y when pronounced long, is spelt as IE, and word-final IE, when pronounced short is spelt as Y. When the plural ending is added, the Y is not substituted with IE and still show the correct pronunciation.

And many other minor changes I can't remember now.

The Stori Behaind the Röbot Novels

The raiting said ov mai luv afeir with röbots began on Mei 10, 1939, but az a scïenc-fikcion ryder it began urlier stil.

Röbots wur, after ol, nuthing neu in scïenc fikcion, not yven in 1939. Mekanikal hüman byings ar tu by faund in äncient and mediëval miths and lejends, and the wurd "röbot" orijinali apëred in Karl Čapek's plei R.Ü.R., wich woz furst stäjed in 1921 in Chekhoslovakia, but woz són tranzläted intu meni languajes.

R.Ü.R. stands for "Rossum's Ünivursal Röbots." Rossum, an Inglish industrialist, prodüced artificial hüman byings dezïned tu dó the läbor ov the wurld and tu fry hümaniti for a laif ov kreätiv lezür. (The wurd "röbot" is frum a Chekh wurd myning "kompulsori läbor.") Thou Rossum ment wel, it did'nt wurk aut az hi planed: the röbots rebeled, and the hüman spëcies woz destroied.

It is perhaps not surprïzing that a teknolojikal advanc, imajined in 1921, woz syn az rezulting in ünivursal dizaster. Remember that Wurld Wor I, with its tanks, eirpläns, and poizon gas, had just ended and had shoued pëpel "the dark said ov the forc," tu üz Star Wors turminoloji.

R.Ü.R. aded its somber veu tu that ov the yven mor fämos Frankenstein, in wich the kreäcion ov anuther kaind ov artificial hüman bying olso ended in dizaster, thou on a mor limited skäl. Folouing thyz exampels, it bekeim veri komon, in the 1920s and 1930s, tu piktür röbots az dänjeros devïces that inväriabli destroied their kreätors. The moral woz pointed aut ouver and ouver agen that "ther ar sum things Man woz not ment tu knou."

Yven az a yungster, thou, ai kúd not bring maiself tu belyv that if knoulej prezented dänjer, the solücion woz ignoranc. Tu mi, it alweiz symed that the solücion had tu by wizdom. Eu did not refüz tu lúk at dänjer, rather eu lurned hau tu handel it seifli.

After ol, this has byn the hüman chalenj sinc a curten gróp ov prïmäts bekeim hüman in the furst pläc. Eni teknolojikal advanc kan by dänjeros. Fair woz dänjeros frum the start, and sou (yven mor sou) woz spych—and bouth ar stil dänjeros tu this dei—but hüman byings wúd not by hüman withaut them.

At eni rät, withaut quït knouing wot disatisfïed mi abaut the röbot storis ai red, ai weited for sumthing beter, and ai faund it in the December 1938 isü ov Astaunding Scïenc Fikcion. That isü konteined "Helen Ö'loi" bai Lester del Rei, a stori in wich a röbot woz portreied simpathetikali. It woz, ai belyv, ounli hiz sekond stori, but ai woz a del Rei fan forever after. (Plëz do'nt enibodi tel him this. Hi must never knou.)

At olmoust the seim taim, in the Janüari 1939 isü ov Ameizing Storis, Eando Bïnder portreied a simpathetik röbot in Ai, Röbot. This woz much the pórer stori ov the twó, but agen ai vïbräted. Dimli, ai began tu fyl that ai wonted tu rait a stori in wich a röbot wúd by portreied luvingli. And on Mei 10, 1939, ai began such a stori. The job túk mi twó wyks, for in thouz deis it túk mi quït a wail tu rait a stori.

Ai koled it "Robi," and it woz abaut a röbot nursmeid, hó woz luved bai the chaild it keired for and fired bai the chïld's muther. Fred Pöl (hó woz olso naintyn at the taim, and hó has mached mi yir for yir ever sinc) woz waizer than ai, hauever. Wen hi red it, hi sed that Jon Kambel, the ol-pauerful editor ov Astaunding, wúd not teik it bekaüz it woz tó much laik "Helen Ö'loi." Hi woz rayt. Kambel rejekted it for that veri rëzon.

Hauever, Fred bekeim editor ov a peir ov neu magazins són after, and hi túk "Robi" on March 25, 1940. It apëred in the September 1940 isü ov Süper-Scïenc Storis, thou its neim woz chänjed tu "Stränj Pleifelou." (Fred had an ooful habit ov chänjing tïtels, olmoust alweiz for the wurc. The stori has apëred meni taims sinc, but alweiz under mai oun orijinal tïtel.)

Ai woz, in thouz deis, disatisfïed with eni seil not meid tu Kambel, hauever, and sou ai traied anuther röbot stori after awail. Ai diskused the ïdëa with Kambel furst, thou, tu meik shür hi wúd'nt rejekt it for enithing uther than inadequat raiting, and then ai rout "Rëzon," in wich a röbot got relijon, sou tu spyk.

Kambel boot it on November 22, 1940, and it apëred in the Äpril 1941 isü ov hiz magazin. It woz mai thurd seil tu him and the furst wun hi had teiken az it stúd, withaut requesting revizion. Ai woz sou eläted bai this that ai kwikli rout a thurd röbot stori, abaut a maind-ryding röbot, wich ai koled "Lïar!", and this wun Kambel olso túk, and it apëred in the Mei 1941 isü. Ai had twó röbot storis in twó sukcesiv isüs.

After that, ai did not intend tu stop. Ai had a sëris gouing.

Hellerick

Ai had mor than that. On December 23, 1940, wen ai woz diskusing mai ïdëa for a maind-ryding röbot with Kambel, wi faund aurselvs diskusing the rüls that guverned the wei in wich a röbot beheived. It symed tu mi that röbots wur enjinëring devïces with bilt-in säfgards, and sou the twó ov us began giving vurbal form tu thouz säfgards—thyz bekeim the "Thry Looes ov Röbotiks."

Ai furst wurked aut the fïnal form ov the Thry Looes, and üzed them explicitli, in mai fourth röbot stori, "Runaraund," wich apëred in the March 1942 isü ov Astaunding. The Thry Looes furst apër on päj 100 ov that isü. Ai lúked that up, bekaüz wer thei apër ther is the veri furst üz ov the wurd "röbotiks" in the histori ov the wurld, az far az ai knou.

Ai went on tu rait four mor röbot storis for Astaunding in the 1940s. Thei wur "Kach That Rabit," "Eskäp" (wich Kambel koled "Päradoxical Eskäp" bekaüz twó yirs befor hi had published a stori with "Eskäp" az the tïtel), "Evidenc," and "The Evitabel Konflikt." Thyz apëred in the Febrüari 1944, Aügust 1945, September 1946, and Jún 1950 isüs ov Astaunding.

Bai 1950, important publishing hauses, nötabli Dubeldei and Kumpani, wur begining tu publish hardkuver scïenc fikcion. In Janüari 1950, Dubeldei published mai furst búk, the scïenc-fikcion novel Pebel in the Skai, and ai woz hard at wurk on a sekond novel.

It okurred tu Fred Pöl, hó woz mai äjent for a bryf përiod at that taim, that perhaps a búk kúd by meid aut ov mai röbot storis. Dubeldei woz not intrested in short-stori kolekcions at the taim, but a veri smol publishing haus, Gnöm Pres, woz.

On Jún 8, 1950, the kolekcion woz handed tu Gnöm Pres, and the tïtel ai geiv it woz Maind and Airon. The publisher shúk hiz hed.

"Let's kol it Ai, Röbot," hi sed.

"Wi ka'nt," Ai sed. "Eando Bïnder rout a short stori with that tïtel ten yirs agou."

"Hó kärs?" sed the publisher (thou that is a baudlerïzed vurzion ov wot hi rëalli sed), and ai alaued maiself, rather unyzili, tu by persuäded. Ai, Röbot woz mai sekond búk, and it keim aut just befor the end ov 1950.

The búk konteined mai eyt röbot storis frum Astaunding, with their order rearänjed tu meik a mor lojikal progresion. In adicion, ai inklüded "Robi," mai furst stori, bekaüz ai laiked it despït Kambel's rejekcion.

Ai had riten thry uther röbot storis in the 1940s that Kambel had yther rejekted or never syn, but thyz wur not in the direkt path ov progresion ov the storis, sou ai left them aut. Thyz, hauever, and uther röbot storis riten in the dekäds sinc Ai, Röbot, wur inklüded in leiter kolekcions—ol ov them, withaut excepcion, apëred in The Komplët Röbot, published bai Dubeldei in 1982.

Ai, Röbot did not meik a big splash on publikäcion, but it sold stedili, if slouli, yir after yir. Within faiv yirs, it had kum aut in an Armed Forces edicion, in a chyper hardkuver edicion, in a British edicion, and in a Jurman edicion (mai furst foren-languaj apëranc). In 1956, it woz yven published in a päperbak edicion bai Neu Amerikan Lïbrari.

The ounli trubel woz that Gnöm Pres woz just beirli survïving, and it never did get araund tu giving mi klir semianüal stätments, or much in the wei ov peiments. (That went for mai thry Faundäcion búks, wich Gnöm Pres olso published.)

In 1961, Dubeldei bekeim aweir ov the fakt that Gnöm Pres woz having trubel, and thei aränjed tu teik ouver Ai, Röbot (and the Faundäcion búks, tó). Frum then on, ol the búks did much beter. In fakt, Ai, Röbot has remeined in print ever sinc it woz furst published. That's thurti-thry yirs nau. In 1981, it woz yven sold tu the móvis, olthou nou möcion piktür has yet byn meid. It has olso apëred in eyttyn diferent foren languajes that ai knou ov, inklüding Rusian and Hëbreu.

But ai'm geting wei ahed ov the stori.

Let's gou bak tu 1952, at wich taim Ai, Röbot woz just ploding along az a Gnöm Pres búk, and ai had nou hint ov eni rëal sukces.

Bai that taim, neu top-noch scïenc-fikcion magazins had kum aut and the fyld woz in wun ov its periodik "bóms." The Magazin ov Fantasi and Scïenc Fikcion apëred in 1949, and Galaxi Scïenc Fikcion in 1950. With that Jon Kambel lost hiz monopoli ov the fyld, and the "Golden Äj" ov the 1940s woz ouver.

Ai began tu rait for Horac Gold, the editor ov Galaxi, and with sum relëf, tó. For a përiod ov eyt yirs, ai had riten for Kambel exklüsivli and ai had kum tu fyl that ai woz a wun-editor raiter and that if enithing hapened tu Kambel, ai wúd by thró. Mai sukces in seling tu Gold relëved mai anzïetis in this respekt. Gold yven sërialïzed mai sekond novel, The Stars, Laik Dust..., olthou hi chänjed its tïtel tu Tairan, wich ai konsidered ooful.

Nor woz Gold mai ounli neu editor. Ai sold a röbot stori tu Hauard Braun, hó edited Ameizing düring a bryf përiod wen it traied tu by a quoliti magazin. The stori, entïteld "Satisfakcion Gärantëed," apëred in the Äpril 1951 isü ov that magazin.

That woz an excepcion, thou. On the houl, ai had nou intention ov raiting further röbot storis at that taim. The apëranc ov Ai, Röbot symed tu hav broot that porcion ov mai literari karër tu its natüral klouz, and ai woz móving on tu uther things.

Gold, hauever, having published wun sërial bai mi, woz purfektli wiling tu trai anuther, especialli sinc a neu novel ai had riten. The Kurrents ov Späc, had byn teiken bai Kambel for sërialïzäcion.

On Äpril 19, 1952, Gold and ai wur tooking ouver the mater ov a neu novel that woz tu apër in Galaxi. Hi sugjested a röbot novel. Ai shúk mai hed furmli. Mai röbots had apëred ounli in short storis, and ai woz not at ol shür ai kúd rait a houl novel bäsed on röbots.

"Shür eu kan," sed Gold. "Hau abaut an ouver-popüläted wurld in wich röbots ar teiking ouver hüman jobs?"

"Tó depresing," Ai sed. "Ai'm not shür ai wont tu handel a hevi söciolojikal stori."

"Dó it yor wei. Eu laik misteris. Pút a murder in such a wurld and hav a detektiv solv it with a röbot partner. If the detektiv dues'nt solv it, the röbot wil repläc him."

That struk fair. Kambel had ofen sed that a scïenc-fikcion misteri stori woz a kontradikcion in turms; that advances in teknoloji kúd by üzed tu get detektivs aut ov their difikultis unfeirli, and that the ryders wúd therfor by chyted.

Ai sat daun tu rait a stori that wúd by a klasik misteri and that wúd not chyt the ryder—and yet wúd by a treu scïenc-fikcion stori. The rezult woz The Kävs ov Styl. It apëred in Galaxi az a thry-part sërial in the Oktöber, November, and December 1953 isüs, and in 1954, it woz published bai Dubeldei az mai eleventh búk.

Ther woz nou question but that The Kävs ov Styl woz mai moust sukcesful búk tu dät. It sold beter than eni ov mai urlier búks; it elicited nïcer leters frum ryders; and (best próf ov ol) Dubeldei smailed at mi with greiter wormth than ever befor. Until that point, thei wonted autlïns and chapters frum mi befor handing mi kontrakts, but after that ai got mai kontrakts on mai mir stätment that ai woz gouing tu rait anuther búk.

The Kävs ov Styl woz sou sukcesful, in fakt, that it woz inevitabel that ai rait a sëquel. Ai wúd hav started it at wunc, ai think, if ai had not just begun tu rait scïenc popülarïzäcions and faund ai enjoied dóing that tremendosli. It woz not til Oktöber 1955 that ai aktüali began The Neiked Sunn.

Wunc begun, hauever, it went smóthli. In meni weis, it balanced the urlier búk. The Kävs ov Styl túk pläc on Urth, a wurld ov meni hüman byings and feu röbots, wail The Neiked Sunn túk pläc on Söläria, a wurld ov feu hüman byings and meni röbots. Wot's mor, olthou mai búks ar jeneralli devoid ov romanc, ai aktüali introdüced an understäted luv stori intu The Neiked Sunn.

Ai woz entïrli satisfïed with the sëquel, and in mai hart, thoot it woz yven beter than The Kävs ov Styl, but wot woz ai tu dó with it? Ai had groun sumwot estränjed frum Kambel, hó had teiken up an od bit ov pseudoscïenc koled dïanetiks and had manajed tu bekum intrested in flaiing saücers, in psioniks, and in varios uther questionabel maters. On the uther hand, ai oued him a greit dyl and ai felt rather gilti ouver having larjli shifted tu Gold, hó had had twó ov mai sërials in a rou. But az hi had nuthing tu dó with the planing ov The Neiked Sunn, ai kúd dispöz ov it az ai wished.

Ai ofered the novel tu Kambel, therfor, and hi túk it at wunc. It apëred az a thry-part sërial in the Oktöber, November, and December 1956 isüs ov Astaunding, and Kambel did'nt chänj mai tïtel, yther. In 1957, it woz published bai Dubeldei az mai twentieth búk.

It did just az wel az The Kävs ov Styl, if not beter, and Dubeldei at wunc pointed aut ai kúd'nt lyv it ther. Ai wúd hav tu rait a thurd búk and meik it a triloji, just az mai thry Faundäcion búks meid up a triloji.

Ai fúli agrëed. Ai had a ruf ïdëa ov the plot ov the thurd búk, and ai had a tïtel—The Baunds ov Infiniti.

In Júlai 1958, the famili woz teiking a thry-wyk vakäcion in a haus at the shor in Marshfyld, Masachúsets, and it woz mai plan tu get tu wurk and dó a sïzabel chunk ov the neu novel ther. It woz gouing tu by set on Aürora, wer the hüman/röbot balanc woz tu by nyther ouverweited in the direkcion ov the hüman az in The Kävs ov Styl nor in the direkcion ov the röbot az in The Neiked Sunn. Wot's mor, the element ov romanc woz tu by much strengthened.

Ai woz ol set—and yet, sumthing woz rong. Ai had groun stedili mor intrested in non-fikcion in the 1950s, and for the furst taim, ai started a novel wich wúd'nt kach fair. After four chapters, ai fäded aut and geiv up. Ai decïded that in mai hart ai felt ai kúd'nt handel the romanc, kúd'nt balanc the hüman/röbot mixtür in properli ëqual fashon.

For twenti-faiv yirs, that woz the wei it remeined. Nyther The Kävs ov Styl nor The Neiked Sunn daied or went aut ov print. Thei apëred tugether in The Röbot Novels<nowiki>; thei apëred with a gróp ov short storis in </nowiki>The Rest ov the Röbots. And thei apëred in varios softkuver edicions.

For twenti-faiv yirs, therfor, ryders had them aveilabel tu ryd and, ai prezúm, enjoi. Az a rezult, meni rout mi tu ask for a thurd novel. At konvencions thei asked mi direktli. It bekeim the moust shürfair request ai woz tu recëv (except the request for a fourth Faundäcion novel).

And wenever ai woz asked if ai intended tu rait a thurd röbot novel, ai alweiz ansered, "Yes—sumdei—sou prei for a long laif for mi."

Sumhau, ai felt ai oot tu, but az the yirs pased ai greu mor and mor curten that ai kúd'nt handel it, and mor and mor sadli konvinced that the thurd novel woz never gouing tu by riten.

Hallucigenia sparsa

Röbot

Röbot
