"It is surprising tha the think so" is no longer acceptable to most English speakers.

Most speakers of CONTEMPRARY English would consider the second statement to be either archaic, or a a simple grammatical error. The first is perfectly acceptable.
"It is surprising that he thinks so" is acceptable.
"It is surprising that he should think" so is accpetable.
"It is surprising that he think so" is no longer acceptable to most English speakers.

If you have Hewings' Advanced Grammar in Use, it is Chapter 48. Should in That Clauses.
In GRAMMARWAY Level 4 it is treated in Chapter 9, Condionals, Had Better, Wishes, Unreal Past...

I like Vince's exercises, but I don't like his explanations.
Цитата: Robert Dunwell от декабря 27, 2013, 20:12Именно этот раздел я сегодня закончил. Я сопоставляю Винса с тем, что есть в Качаловой.
If you look at his Advanced Language Practice, Chapter 9, Unreal Time and Subjunctives, you will find quite a lot about the subjunctive.
Цитата: Robert Dunwell от декабря 27, 2013, 20:12Мне очень интересен именно классический литературный английский. Не менее интересна и грамматика сама по себе.
The Subjunctive is used very little in Modern English. The conditional is far more frequent. It is usually coverned only at the advanced level, or in fixed formlas like I suggest he (should) go there...
The Subjunctive is very common in CLASSICAL ENGLISH, but has been significantly simplified in CONTEMPORARY ENGLISH. Kachalova is much more concerned with CLASSICAL ENGLISH, and not with English as it is spoken today.

Интересует следующий вопрос. Возьмём многострадальные придаточные условия.
If he break the regulation, he will be fined.
Здесь break - present subjunctive.
Но ведь здесь легко может быть употреблён и индикатив:
If he breaks the regulation, he will be fined.
Какова разница (смысловая, стилистическая) между этими случаями?
It is surprising that he thinks so. (индикатив)
It is surprising that he think so. (конъюнктив)
Какова разница (смысловая, стилистическая) между этими случаями?
(Знаю, что можно ещё сказать: "It is surprising that he should think so", и что такое сочетание усиливает чувство удивления. Оно равнозначно со вторым предложением?)

Please note that this is Lesson 8 in the most recent edition of Vince..

Сейчас я занимаюсь по Michael Vince - Advanced Language Practice (with Key) English Grammar and Vocabulary, но в этом учебнике нет системы, и самое главное - необходимых теоретических объяснений, которые есть в Качаловой. Не думал, конечно, что в ней окажутся такие грубые ошибки...
