I couldn't have said it better, except from the fact that in Norway we do not really learn to spell either. Very little time is dedicated to actually learning the language, as most of the time is spent on learning literary genres, writing interviews, giving presentations. All well and good, if only they had actually learned to write properly first. And the frustrating thing is that the teachers cannot spell either. In the 11 years I have had children in school, I have not received one single document from the school without spelling errors. Not one. In 11 years.
When I go to parents' meetings I have seen presentations given by the Head master with up to 10 spelling errors on a single sheet. How do you then even begin to ask them to teach your kids how to spell? We are also actively dicouraged from correcting the spelling errors of our children, as that "might lower their self esteem".
As a dyslectic, I know how important it is to focus on spelling from an early age, so I corrected my children anyway, and my 15 year old is very good at spelling, but not so good a punctuation. But then I am a walking disaster there myself, as I never learned punctuation properly either. My 11-year old is a work in progress, but I do not see that any emphasis is given on helping her with that at school. They do not want to "focus too much on knowledge aquisition".

If they are going to allow kids to spell things incorrectly without correction because it might lower their self-esteem then they may as well go the whole hog and not correct the kids on anything in case it lowers self-esteem... Instead if they are so worried about self-esteem they should find approaches of helping to correct spelling while providing encouragement, otherwise the kids could get a real blow to their self-esteem later in life in the workplace or at university.
In the UK we just don't seem to teach grammar or writing skills apart from some lessons in primary school and perhaps a few lessons here and there in secondary school. As a result the universities are despairing over the inability of so many people to write properly anymore.
