I wonder why швeйцaр has such meaning in Russian. Are they believed to be just servants or how?Are there cognates in other languages?

Juif Eternel

It seems I've read somewhere that doormen were called in Russia schweitzers because of their uniform: they looked like Swiss guard.

According to the quiz, I speak like people in the American Northeast(NY, Jersey etc.) do. Although, I believe my pronunciation is more British than American.

Чайник777

Well, I could pretend having a fancy Inland North accent (whatever that means),
but frankfully speaking, I've got the thickest Russian accent you'll ever hear.

my result is Northeast.
actually I sound more like the Estuary variety of British :P

I wonder why you are learning Assyrian?
Well, several years ago I received a proposal from one of our forum members (antbez) to visit a free lesson of this language here in Saint-Petersburg and I thought it would be stupid to turn it down.  So I just used the opportunity and didn't give up learning (although I am very far from mastering the language).
Now I think the standard Assyrian language is probably the easiest of all living Semitic languages to learn. (But the problem is that it's slowly dying out).
As for Syriac, it is certainly  a language of interest for me, although I do not devote much time to study it.

You think it's easy? As far as I know it has more developed verb system(lots of tenses) and other odds. Can you recommend sth to learn it. May be, some basic courses?

verb system(lots of tenses)
It's easier than in Spanish, I think. And Spanish is considered an easy language to learn.
And these tenses are similar to those of English.

How was it allow'd to pass that Ye can that vile tongue?

Your Result: The Inland North
But I'm pro-British, so that test fails.
I like 'ow the 'h' is dropped,
and I 'ate when there's 'at instead of 'ot.
'Tis b'cause I sing 'Rule Britannia!'
And I never get bor't!

Versteher

What American accent do you have?
Your Result: The Northeast

Judging by how you talk you are probably from north Jersey, New York City, Connecticut or Rhode Island. Chances are, if you are from New York City (and not those other places) people would probably be able to tell if they actually heard you speak.
