Цитата: zwh от апреля 11, 2016, 22:40A poor excuse, I'm afraid. Obviously English needs digraphs - the problem is its current digraphs may represent... well, everything.
We only have 26, and that is not quite enough.

I don't think I have seen this one, but I have seen others like it. We have a lot of difficulties. The problem is that we don't have enough letters to represent all the different sounds. We only have 26, and that is not quite enough.
We actually have at least 12 vowels: 3 diphthongs, 27 consonants, 4 syllabic consonants (about 46 possible sounds) and only 26 minuscule letters to deal with all of those things. That makes it tough on trying to capture all the sounds with those few graphemes. It also makes it tough on spelling. Add different dialects, and you have a really big problem. I don't know how many languages have things called "spelling bees," but we do. They are quizzes that kids study up for. And some of the spelling rules kids have to learn go on forever: i before e except after c or if they sound like a as in neighbor or weigh.
