I wouldn't recommend Russian tales, they are strange a bit and include many useless words. My boyfriend is German and he is linguist, he works on languages form Caucasus (I'm not sure how to say it in English, because Caucasian in English means any white people) and he has a book with tales translated in Tsez and Russian and he spent lots of time reading tales in Russian but he still has problems in communication and especially in understanding Russian.

I think that Носов "Незнайка" could be probably a good one. It is a childish book and I think probably written in a simple language (but I know that it is hard even read books for children in Russian, my boyfriend is now reading "В стране невыученных уроков" and he find this book difficult.) I always think about what is the easiest and understandable book in Russian? So if I'll suddenly find some great book for reading in Russian I will tell you.

Also my boyfriend use some internet-page where one can see all cases of nouns and verb forms. I will ask him, it seems that this site is great.

Grammar
The best grammar book for Russian I know is Alan Timberlake's "A Reference Grammar of Russian"(0521772923). For some people it can be difficult to learn the language with it, but it's the best tool throughout the studying. You can buy or download it, there is its pdf-copy somewhere in the net, google for it.

A good school Russian grammar book is Бабайцева В.В., Чеснокова Л.Д. Русский язык. Теория. 5-9 кл.

Dictionaries
It's impossible to say what is the best personally for you. There is many different at GoogleBooks or Amazon. Two modern good R-R dictionaries are Yefremova's and Kuznetsov's.

Also I advise you to find and install the Lingvo computer dictionaries. This contains a great collection of both E-R-E and R-R dictionaries as well as Russian-Portuguese. You can buy it, but there are older pirated copies somewhere, google for them. Other alternatives are Polyglossum and Paragon Multilex. Free analogues are GoldenDict and StarDict, but you should find dictionaries by yourself.

Children's books
Google Amazon for Russkie narodnye skazki. There is a great deal of them.

Other authorial examples are classical Afanasyev's tales (1908478748), Yershov's "Konek-gorbunok", Alexei Tolstoy's "Buratino", Nosov's "Neznayka", Aksakov's "Alenky tsvetochek", Bazhov's tales, Mamin-Sibiryak's tales, etc. etc. etc.

Teenagers' books
It's even more difficult. These are approximate lists of books which Russian students usually read at school.

P.S. Don't forget about //archive.org. Books there can be outdated but still useful.

That's a good site for various textbooks. Скачать means "download".

You're welcome. What do you need Russian for?

First of all... I like the language! It sounds awesome, and I like russian history. :)
Also, I study some... religious things... that are only written in russian language.
Nonetheless, I like the russian music (specially Red Army Chorus) and I would like to really understand what is said. :)

I'm still in need of the grammar and dictionary, and the children's book too. I would love to have common children's books, folklore-wise indeed. Do you know some?
I searched and found a couple, like The Death and the Soldier, but I don't know if they are what I expect...

Hi there!

I'm Rafael, from Brazil, and I'm starting my studies around russian language.
For that, I would like to follow the same guideline I followed to learn english (was easiest to me that I). So, I need some indications of native russians (or whomever is able to help me) of this:

a good russian grammar book (basic grammar, preferably one used in mid-school or earlier).
a good russian dictionary (russian-russian, not russian-english, neither other languages. I want a native dictionary).
indications of three books: a children's book. A teenagers book. An adult book.
(e.g Three Little Pigs - Harry Potter - The Eight)

Reassuring that I'm in search for books and not sites. I will buy those books.

Thanks in advance,

Rafael Umbelino

ps: If anyone needs help around portuguese, I would gladly help.
