Name: Encyclopedia of the Chicago Literary Renaissance: The Essential Guide to the Lives and Works of the Chicago Renaissance Writers
Author: Jan Pinkerton, Randolph H. Hudson
Publisher: Facts on File
Publication date: 2004
ISBN: 0816048983
Number of pages: 426
Format / Quality: rar -> pdf
Size: 2.37 MB

Covering the Chicago literary scene from 1880 to 1930, this is the second volume in Facts On File's series on various American literary movements and the writers, books, events, people, and places associated with them.

Most entries are one paragraph in length, but major writers have two- or three-page articles. Important books, such as Sister Carrie, also have longer articles that analyze and summarize the work. All of the articles include cross-references to related entries and, where appropriate, recommended books for further reading. Scattered throughout are black-and-white drawings and photographs, but since many of the included authors are little known today, more photographs would have been helpful. At the end of the book is a list of the major authors and their works, a chronology of events in Chicago, and a detailed index.

Besides authors and works, coverage is given to places, buildings, and events that are of "primary or ancillary importance to students of the Chicago Renaissance," but the explanation of why they have been included is not always clear. The article on the Rookery Building explains why it is one of the finest examples of modern architecture, and it also points out that Frank Norris set part of his novel The Pit in the building. Yet the entry on Quinn Chapel A.M.E. Church says only that it was the first African American church in Chicago. How or why it relates to the Chicago literary renaissance is never explained. Similarly, post-Chicago renaissance writers such as Gwendolyn Brooks, James T. Farrell, and Saul Bellow are covered in short entries, but these entries do not explain how such writers were influenced by the renaissance writers.

Despite this caveat, the book is an excellent source that introduces students to an important literary movement. This is a major new reference title that academic and public libraries with literature collections will want to purchase. High-school libraries in the Midwest will also find it very helpful to their students.

Name: Encyclopedia of Women's History in America
Author: Kathryn Cullen-Dupont
Publisher: Facts on File
Publication date: 2000
ISBN: 0816041008
Number of pages: 418
Format / Quality: rar -> pdf
Size: 3,73 MB

In this treatment of U.S. women's history, Cullen-Dupont (Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Facts on File, 1992, a YA biography) presents over 500 entries for significant events, legislative acts, court cases, organizations, individuals, and publications. Inclusion, though unpredictable, tends to favor specific named groups rather than general concepts (e.g., Operation Rescue and Roe v. Wade; nothing under abortion), and reflects the diversity of women's backgrounds and experience in the United States. Less comprehensive than Angela Zophy's Handbook of American Women's History (LJ 3/1/90), particularly concerning women's occupations and other topics in U.S. social history, this work lacks the advantage of Zophy's specialist contributors. Its emphasis is less biographical than Doris Weatherford's American Women's History (Prentice, 1994); unlike the Weatherford title, it has no illustrations but does include suggested readings after each entry, an extensive bibliography, an appendix of 34 documents, and an index (not seen). Also on the plus side are Cullen-Dupont's engaging prose style, enlivened by frequent quotes from primary sources, and good coverage of recent topics, including entries for Anita Hill, Camille Paglia, "glass ceiling," the Violence Against Women Act (1994), and Harris v. Forklift Systems. An attractive and useful purchase for high school and public libraries, and a good, reasonably priced second choice, after Zophy's work, for academic libraries.?Carolynne Myall, Eastern Washington Univ. Name: A Concise Encyclopedia of Hinduism
Author: Klaus K. Klostermaier
Publisher: Oneworld Publications
Publication date: 1998-11-25
ISBN: 1851681752
Number of pages: 288
Format / Quality: rar -> pdf
Size: 3.37 MB

History has always been a problematic issue in India, where the dating of many a figure is accurate to only within centuries. So to attempt a definitive history of Hinduism would seem foolhardy. Klaus Klostermaier approximated the impossible in his 715-page Survey of Hinduism, and now he has boiled it all down to about half that size. Hinduism is defined as that family of religions that accept the Vedas as authoritative, but despite the single moniker the differences can be vast. From fertility cults to precise rituals that date back thousands of years, Klostermaier cuts across time to illustrate the major strains of Hindu tradition--Vaisnavism, Saivism, and Saktism, along with the nonsectarian smarta. He includes a short history of Hindu philosophy, which in India is inseparable from religion. Klostermaier is a first-rate scholar who expects a lot from his readers, sometimes too much. Anyone who isn't somewhat versed in Hinduism already would do well to pick up his Concise Encyclopedia of Hinduism for handy reference. --Brian Bruya

Name: Encyclopedia of the Harlem Literary Renaissance
Author: Lois Brown
Publisher: Facts on File
Publication date: 2005
ISBN: 081604967X
Number of pages: 612
Format / Quality: rar -> pdf
Size: 4.46 MB

Encyclopedia of the Harlem Literary Renaissance is the latest publication in the Facts on File Literary Movements set. (The other four volumes cover gothic literature, science fiction writers, pulp fiction writers, and the Chicago Literary Renaissance). Author Brown is an associate professor of English with a specialty in African American Studies. Her introduction explains the phenomenon of the Harlem Renaissance and describes recent advances in scholarship, including greater access to primary writings and "Harlem Renaissance-related feminist recovery."

The volume has more than 800 alphabetically arranged entries, most including a short bibliography of further reading. The entries do not cover writers and their works exclusively. Many of the most interesting entries are for educational institutions, such as Fisk University in Nashville, and African American newspapers and magazines, such as The Crisis, 0 edited by W. E. B. DuBois. Brown also includes places (Chicago, Cotton Club, Greenwich Village); organizations and institutions (African Black Brotherhood, New York Public Library, Young Men's Christian Association); events (First World War, Great Depression, Scottsboro trial); and various other topics related to the movement (Alfred A. Knopf, Inc.; Julius Rosenwald Fellowship; Howard University Players). Length ranges from a sentence or two to five for major figures such as DuBois and Jessie Redmon Fauset. The volume is well researched, drawing on letters, diaries, and collected works as well as secondary sources, such as biographies and literary criticism.

Following the introduction is a map of Harlem with places of interest noted and numbered. Other features include a selected bibliography of works by leading Harlem Renaissance figures, a chronology, and a bibliography of secondary sources. Although there is overlap with other sources, such as Encyclopedia of the Harlem Renaissance, published by Facts On File in 2003, this is a worthwhile purchase for public, high-school, and undergraduate collections.

The virtual enterprise as a new organizational paradigm has three fundamental features: dynamics of network reconfiguration, virtuality, and external entities as environments for enabling or supporting the virtual enterprise integration as well as reconfiguration dynamics. The field of knowledge on this topic is highly fragmented due to the inexistence of a transfer of knowledge between regions, developers, and researchers.

The Encyclopedia of Networked&Virtual Organizations documents the most relevant contributions to the introduction of networked, dynamic, agile, and virtual organizational models; definitions; taxonomies; opportunities; and reference models and architectures. These volumes pool the existing works, approaches, solutions, and needs of the virtual enterprise research community to create a repository of the main developments regarding the virtual organization, compiling definitions, characteristics, comparisons, advantages, practices, enabling technologies, and best practices.

Name: Encyclopedia of Beat Literature
Author: Kurt Hemmer
Publisher: Facts on File
Publication date: 2006-12
ISBN: 0816042977
Number of pages: 432
Format / Quality: rar -> pdf
Size: 2,58 MB

Since the 1950s, the experimental style, bohemian life and rebellious attitudes of the Beats have influenced literature and culture. The deaths at the end of the 20th century of such Beat figures as Allen Ginsberg and William Burroughs renewed interest in the lives and work of writers who have held underground appeal for generations of young adults. Some Beat writers and their associates, such as Ginsberg, Jack Kerouac, LeRoi Jones (Amiri Baraka), and Denise Levertov, are now included in classroom anthologies; others have popular appeal for their unorthodox writing style and anti-authoritarian point of view. In an A-to-Z format, this work covers the literary origins and key figures of the Beat movement. More than 500 entries cover: synopses of fiction, poetry and essays by Jack Kerouac, Allen Ginsberg, William Burroughs and other major Beat writers, with notes on background and critical reception.

Name: Magill's Encyclopedia of Science: Animal Life
Author: Carl W. Hoagstrom
Publisher: Salem Press
Publication date: 2002
ISBN: 1587650193
Number of pages: 1820
Format / Quality: rar -> pdf
Size: 22,7 Mb

This illustrated encyclopedia is a major revision and update of the six-volume Magill's Survey of Science: Life Science, published in 1991. The contributors come from a variety of disciplines in the life sciences, and most are affiliated with academic institutions. There are 385 signed main entries, ranging in length from 1000 to 3000 words each; 108 articles are updates from the previous edition, while 277 are new entries. The entries cover a wide variety of topics related to animal life and include articles on subjects such as biodiversity and defense mechanisms as well as those on specific species or individual animals. Each entry begins with ready-reference information and a list of principal terms with definitions. Species entries include a sidebar listing basic facts such as classification, geographical location, habitat, life span, and the anatomical features that make the species unique. The arrangement is strictly alphabetical, which means that specific animals or animal groups are intermingled with general topics, issues, and concepts; "cloning" is followed by "cockroaches," for instance, and "elk" by "embryology." This arrangement functions well for the intended audience of high school, undergraduate, and general readers but could prove frustrating for the younger student preparing a report on a specific animal. The illustrations consist of black-and-white photographs and are neither as numerous nor as exciting as those in Facts on File's three-volume The Encyclopedia of Mammals or DK's one-volume Animal, either of which is a better choice for libraries needing an animal encyclopedia only. The strength of the Magill's set is its comprehensive coverage of animal life science generally, not just individual animals. A worthwhile purchase for libraries needing this type of reference.

When Isaac Newton claimed that he only saw further because he stood on the shoulders of giants, he alluded to the long list of geniuses who came before him. The history of science is the story of great discoveries, flashes of intuition that changed the way people saw the world, hard work, and arduous calculation in the laboratory. But who are the most important men and women whose notions and theories have changed the world? From Galileo to Thales, from the ancient world to the present day, it is sometimes those with the simplest ideas who have had the greatest impact. As the study of the physical world becomes more and more specialized, it is sometimes refreshing to uncover a proof that tips accepted wisdom on its head.

Name: Encyclopedia of Western Colonialism Since 1450 (3 volume set)
Author: Thomas Benjamin
Publisher: Cambridge University Press
Publication date: 2007
ISBN: 0028660854
Number of pages: 1248
Format / Quality: rar -> pdf
Size: 35.5 MB

The Encyclopedia of Western Colonialism since 1450 provides the most comprehensive, accessible, and international reference work about the entirety of Western colonialism from the Portuguese voyages of Prince Henry the Navigator in the fifteenth-century to the making of feature films about British colonialism in India in the twenty-first-century.The Encyclopedia presents over four hundred articles in three volumes. The Encyclopedia of Western Colonialism since 1450 is not only a comprehensive reference work that embraces world history during the past five centuries, it is as well an international intellectual project.

* The colonial empires of the West—Portugal, Spain, France, Great Britain, the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, Italy and the United States—claimed possession at one time or another all of the Americas and Australia, ninety-nine percent of Polynesia, ninety percent of Africa and nearly fifty percent of Asia.
* These Western colonial powers, which together constituted less than two percent of the surface of the world, created the first maritime empires that straddled the globe.
* In so doing Western colonialism dispatched European colonialists to every inhabitable region, implanted and disseminated Christianity throughout the colonial world and exported the languages, laws, institutions, technology and values of the West to nearly all lands, peoples, and cultures worldwide.
* This political, economic, and cultural expansionism reshaped the non-European societies and cultures with which it came into sustained contact. One can easily understand that the history and very nature of Western colonialism has been a subject of great controversy and conflicting moral claims.
* This history is not a closed and forgotten chapter without relevance to the problems and promise of today. It remains a fascinating subject open to interpretation and vigorous debate.

This substantial expansion and reworking of the classic Encyclopedia of Africa South of the Sahara (1997) covers the entire continent, from the Europe-facing shores of the Mediterranean to the commercial bustle of Cape Town. The set addresses the entire history of African cultures from the pharaohs and the ancient civilizations of the south through the colonial era to the emergence of 53 independent countries, some of them, like Nigeria, newly emergent in world commerce and others deep in conflict (Sudan, Liberia, Congo). The NEA treats today's African peoples not as the obscure "other" of a "Dark Continent" but as actors on a world stage where issues of global development, the AIDS crisis, and international terrorism play out across a map where indigenous cultures continue to function beneath an imperfect European overlay of "national states." Anthropology, geography, history, and cultural studies by an international team of more than 600 distinguished Africanists (including over 150 from Africa and the African Diaspora) show us Africa—as seen by Africans themselves.
Features hundreds of photographs, including five color essays, plus maps, thematic outline, chronology, and appendix of ethnic and identity groups.

This three-volume set by an education journalist contains nearly 2,500 entries on every aspect of education at all levels from colonial times to the present. Legal issues, teaching methods, types of schools, educational organizations and programs, tests, publications, administration, and leading educators are some of the broad areas covered. Articles range from a few sentences (voucher system, classical realism, phoneme) to several pages (school choice, prayer-in-school, student unrest), with most falling somewhere in between (Channel One, Coleman Report, multicultural education). Entries for each state briefly survey the history of education there. The one for Alabama states that "fewer than 30% of its adults have high school diplomas" ; other sources say more than 60 percent are high-school graduates. Entries give concise definitions and descriptions, which will be sufficient for most users. The treatment is often historical, however; entries do not always delve into current issues. For instance, the incorporation of trade books into the elementary curriculum is not mentioned in children's literature; the controversy over alternatives to vivisection is not found under biology. There is no entry for the Internet, a topic that certainly has many implications for education, and it is not mentioned in computers. Curiously, saving space is provided as the reason library catalogs and other holdings were converted to computer files in recent years.

The traditional lifestyles and customs of individual North American tribes and their history after contact with encroaching whites are topics discussed in alphabetical entries ranging from Abenaki to Zuni. Cross-referenced segments on cultural areas, i.e., Northeast, supplement the information given under individual tribal headings. Sections on prehistory, Mayas, Aztecs, and Olmecs are included. Entries contain a lot of information but are often chatty, rambling discussions that stray from the topic. The work does not go significantly beyond Barbara Leitch's A Concise Dictionary of Indian Tribes of North America (LJ 4/1/80). Recommended for public libraries lacking Leitch.Mary B. Davis, Museum of the American Indian Lib., New York

The Qur'an is the primary religious text for one-sixth of the world's population. Understood by Muslims to contain God's own words, it has been an object of reverence and of intense study for centuries. The thousands of volumes that Muslim scholars have devoted to qur'anic interpretation and to the linguistic, rhetorical and narrative analysis of the text are sufficient to create entire libraries of qur'anic studies. Drawing upon a rich scholarly heritage, Brill's "Encyclopaedia of the Qur'an" (EQ) combines alphabetically-arranged articles about the contents of the Qur'an. It is an encyclopaedic dictionary of qur'anic terms, concepts, personalities, place names, cultural history and exegesis extended with essays on the most important themes and subjects within qur'anic studies. With nearly 1000 entries in 5 volumes, the "EQ" is the first comprehensive, multi-volume reference work on the Qur'an to appear in a Western language. Cross-referencing and indices, frequent cross-references will draw readers to related entries and each article will conclude with a citation of relevant bibliography. The final volume of the "EQ" will contain indices of transliterated terms, of qur'anic references and of the authors and exegetes cited in the entries and essays. It will also include a synoptic outline of the full contents of the "EQ". "The EQ" is a fully international work supported by an international board of advisors. Scholars from many nations have written articles for the encyclopaedia. Projected Publication Dates: Volume One (A-D): In print, Volume Two (E-I): In print, Volume Three (J-O): In print 2003, Volume Four (P-Sh): In print 2004, and Volume Five: Fall 2005.

Crack cocaine. Exercise addiction/dependence. Gambling, pathological. Internet. Nicotine. These addictions are among the more than 300 entries in this volume, which provides coverage of the symptoms, possible causes, treatment, rate of occurrence, social and ethnic influences, and emergency treatment of addictions, among other topics. Eighteen helpful appendixes provide information on state mental health agencies, rates of substance abuse by high-schoolers, demographics of people who have received treatment for substance abuse, and more. Numerous tables and graphs help communicate complex statistical data.

The inclusion of important organizational contact information directly within the individual entries is a useful feature. For example, at the end of the entry for Credit card overspending, the reader will find the mailing address and URL for Debtor's Anonymous. Similarly, within the entry Depression may be found the addresses, phone numbers, and URLs for six related organizations, including the National Foundation for Depressive Illness and the National Institute of Mental Health. In other works, such information may only be found in an appendix. Here, it is found in both locations, and the redundancy is appreciated.

The index is well constructed, and boldfaced numbers quickly direct the reader to any topic's primary entries. See and see also references are present in the body and the index. A few useful cross-references are missing. For example, someone interested in investigating an addiction to plastic surgery would have to know to turn instead to Cosmetic surgery without the directional nudge of a see reference anywhere in the book.

Nonetheless, the encyclopaedia is a very user-friendly, trustworthy resource and is recommended for a wide range of readers, certainly young adult through general audiences. It is appropriate for many types of libraries, including public, high school, and undergraduate.
